Irregular periods: what details are useful to track?

When periods become irregular, a clear record of what changed can help during a consultation. A simple calendar or phone note is often enough.

What to record

  • The first and last day of each period.
  • Whether bleeding is lighter or heavier than usual.
  • Bleeding or spotting between periods.
  • Pain severity and when the pain occurs.
  • Associated symptoms such as discharge, dizziness, breast symptoms or pelvic pain.
  • Major changes in weight, stress, medicines or contraception.

Why this information helps

Irregular bleeding can have many possible causes. A timeline helps your doctor understand the pattern and decide what questions, examination or investigations may be appropriate.

When to seek earlier review

Very heavy bleeding, fainting, severe pain, bleeding during a possible pregnancy or another concerning symptom should be assessed promptly.
